Spannende Aufgaben in Rumänien

Our children, our future

The volunteers will be working in 14 villages around Cluj-Napoca, in the local schools in planning and organizing road-safety and multicultural lessons for the children in the communities. The volunteers will live in Cluj because all of the villages are close to the city.

The project’s title is “Our children, our future” and it is structured on 2 different activities – Activity 1 will involve 3 volunteers, while activity 2 will host 2 volunteers.
Activity 1 of the project in which the volunteer will be involved is a road safety and multicultural education program. This EVS project is continuing a local project that our organization has implemented starting with September 2008 in 14 villages in the rural area of our county.
The EVS project entails presentations that are held in the schools of 14 rural communities that surround the city of Cluj-Napoca in front of the pupils from primary schools (7-11 years old). Every month, a relevant theme for road safety or multicultural education is presented in every of the 14 schools in an attractive manner and by using non-formal education elements. The activity aims at developing a responsible behavior in a way that will not be considered boring by the children and by using as many visual elements as possible.
All the 14 communities are close to Cluj-Napoca (maximum 50 km) and the access to them is made either by using public transportation or by car. Hence the volunteers will not be living in the rural area but in the city, sharing an apartment with our current EVS volunteer.
The volunteers’ main role will be to prepare the presentation (from choosing the subject approached to selecting materials and activities that are suitable for the subject) and to actually present the topic in front of the children. The lessons will focus mainly on road safety and on multicultural education, but at the same time the volunteers will be given the chance to put into practice their own ideas regarding the topics for the lessons.
Besides all the details specific to any EVS project (the volunteers living together, taking Romanian lessons to facilitate their integration in the community and in the working environment, having the support of a mentor etc.), the most important features of our project are:
The project has as main objective the personal development of the volunteers, including growth in areas such as communication skills, deeper understanding of the concept of mutual acceptance and tolerance, time management skills, planning and organizing events, team-work related skills , creativity and innovation etc; in order to maximize the reaching of this objective every volunteer will have the support of a mentor; the mentor will work together with the volunteer sustaining him/her in establishing and reaching their own learning objectives;
from the perspective of the community’s development one of our objectives is to continue to teach road safety and responsible behavior in traffic to the children from the communities and to improve the program by adding the outside standpoint of the volunteers;
the first 3 months (July-September 2010) will be dedicated to preparing the actual implementation with the volunteers; this stage will include: learning Romanian since the presentations in the schools will be held in Romanian (if after the 3 months the volunteers will not feel comfortable with the level of Romanian learned, there will also be a possibility of recruiting local volunteers to accompany the EVS volunteers during their first presentations in schools), selecting the subject and the activities for all the presentations(all revolving around road safety) , rehearsing the first presentation in front of the other volunteers and the project coordinator (to get used to all the elements and to improve the elements that need this) etc.;
during the first stage of preparation, the volunteers will also visit the 14 communities accompanied by the project coordinator; during these visits the volunteers will have the possibility to meet the children and the teachers they will work with, to be introduce to the children, to become familiar with the communities and the transportation means used, to choose the communities they want to work in, to know their contact persons within each community;
every volunteer will be responsible for 4-5 communities where they will organize approximately 7 presentations during their service in our organization (one every month starting from November 2010 to may 2011); when not in the communities the volunteers will work at our office in preparing the future visits in the schools but also with a possibility of being involved in other projects of the organization;
even though we are talking about a road safety project, the volunteers will be given the opportunity to include other subjects in the presentations held in the schools according to their own interest and the need identified amongst children;
the volunteers will also have the chance to bring their own ideas in the project and even start something new, in addition to the road safety program, in the rural communities; we will take into consideration all the ideas and the proposals and we will assess, together with the volunteers, the opportunity of putting these ideas into practice;
As far as the practical arrangements are concerned a few problems need to be mentioned:
The volunteers will be living together in the same apartment with our current volunteers; since the living accommodations have not been finalised yet we can not give more specific details, but we want to prepare the volunteers for the possibility of not having their own room; most probably every volunteer will be sharing the same room with another volunteer from the same project, according to gender;
The volunteers will be given a monthly allowance that covers the expenses with the living accommodation and with the food (the volunteers will be responsible for cooking their own food); in addition every month the volunteer will be given a payment that represents the “pocket money” that he/she can spend for other needs besides accommodation and food;
The schedule of the volunteers include 5 days of activity per week; as a consequence every volunteer has the right to 2 free days every week; beside these, every month every volunteer will have 2 additional days off that he/she will be able to use to visit the surroundings of Cluj-Napoca;
Every volunteer has the right to participate in a training cycle specific to any EVS project: pre-departure training (in the country of residence), on arrival training and mid-term evaluation (both in the hosting country), final evaluation (in the country of residence);

The folk high school is placed in Brenderup - a small village with a couple of groceries, drug stores, schools and a library.
Brenderup is close to both beach and forest. We often arrange activities away from the high school. The type of activities depends on the season, but examples of activities are going to the beach for a swim or touring on the school bikes.
The closest city is Middelfart which is 16 km west from Brenderup.

Proposed activities for EVS volunteers:
The volunteers will have the possebility to be a part of the special fellowship you find on a folk high school.
The most important task for the volunteers will be to inspire us in our daily work. We expect them to help us look at the work we are doing in new ways, and to provide a different viewpoint in the themes we are discussing. There will be plenty of opportunity for the volunteers to make new initiatives and for creating their own activities.
Examples of activities in which the volunteers could be involved:
" construction of a nature playground for grown-ups
" Office work (making brochures, updating facebook, eg.)
" other practical work in or around the high school

" Hosting in some evenings/weekends during the term

The volunteers will also have the opportunity to participate in folkmusic clases, art classes and our international class where international subjects are taught.
They will also be able to receive Danish lessons in the nearby city Middelfart.
Lodging and boarding:
The volunteers will be lodged at the high school where they will live in a separate area with bedrooms, bathroom and kitchenette with a microwave etc. They will eat at the school together with the students and the staff.
The volunteers will also be invited to social events arranged by the AFS's local chapters together with other volunteers, exchange students and host families.

Volunteer profiles and recruitment process:
We would prefer volunteers who are open-minded, reflective, mature and full of initiative.
Volunteers with interest in folk music will be welcomed specially to apply.
The volunteers must be able to speak English at a conversational level.

Motivation and EVS experience
The Detský domov -/in English Children´s Home /has previous experience in sending EVS volunteer because we´ve been taking part in this programme since 2006 .
This project has the main aim to let European young people know another country, a different culture with its meals, language and manners. In this way volunteer will get to know new facts and learn new skills. We would like to export our culture and traditions and make foreigners know about the beauties of our country.
Moreover, we have decided to join this project because we think that this could be a way to enrich our organization with other cultures and ideas. For this purpose volunteers during their EVS are taking part in the activities and of our organisation, considering their interests and skills, and are being encouraged to promote their own ideas to create new activities or to improve the existing ones.
Working in our organization enables them meet new people and make friendships easier. We would also like to be the sending organisation and to give a chance to young people from our organisation to participate on the EVS projects in different parts of Europe.
The Children´s Home has obtained accreditation as the Sending Organisation under European Voluntary Services in 2005. Later in that year we sent a young adult as the EVS volunteer to Greece. He then, after the completion of the voluntary service, successfully realised a one-year project also in Greece - Future Capital . This successful person showed a very good adaptation to other communities, he can now speak English and Greek. He is on Cyprus at the moment, having a career promotion in organising free time activities, and left the Children´s Home in autumn 2007. We cannot imagine a better and more universal way for such young people from children´s homes how to learn and become independent in their lives. He left the home after over 10 years well prepared thanks to this opportunity. After he departed, another young adult from our Children´s Home has expressed his earnest interest in EVS. We consider this way of gaining self-independence a very progressive and unique one. This is our main motive - to support and help adult children interested in this programme on their way of independence.
Description of the organisation
Children´s Home in the town of Vranov nad Toplou is a governmental institution which provides permanent social and educational custody and guardianship for children with mandatory institutional education from the birth to 25 years of age and then up to their independence but no longer than the age of 25. The capacity of the home is 60 children and young people. There are children with mandatory institutional education who were chosen from unsuitable and unbearable family environments.
The Children´s Home provides elementary institutional care, boarding and maintenance. It also arranges culture, recreation, afterschool and sports activities. Our duties are to give children and young people accommodation, food, care, preparing for school and education, free time activities and psychotherapy. We provide medical and educational care, too. Educational process is carried out on the basis of Christian education respecting the Chart Of Child´s Rights. After the age of 25, we help these young people to find accommodation and jobs because they have to leave the Children´s Home.
In our home we live like in 5 professional families. In such a professional family live an educator, the children and young people (about 10 or 12) between the ages of 1 and 25.
The Children´s Home is active in finding compensatory care such as personal care, custody, adoption in homeland or abroad. It also helps the children to return to their original biological families.
There live children who attend primary, secondary and special schools. The children´s needs are various and depend on their mental and physical abilities. Our home has a grass playground for many sports activities, sand-pits, fitness gym, Internet cafe, mountain bikes, zone of free relaxation.

Ayuntamiento de Ribadavia

Project environment
A. Project environment: profile of the organisation and local community
The Ribeiro Region is the most western of the province of Ourense, in the only interior province of the independent community of Galicia. It limits to the West with the province of Pontevedra, to the North with the territories of the Carballiño and Ourense, whereas to the east and the south is the region of Celanova.

There are ten city councils in the region, Ribadavia being the capital with 19 km2 and a population density of 286.7 hab/km2. It concentrates the main administrative, commercial, public and private services functions, and by its location it has been traditionally the centre of the communication network of the Region with the outside.

The medieval villa of Ribadavia is the capital of the historical region of the Ribeiro, where the famous and mythical wine so praised by kings and poets from unmemorable times, comes from.

In the past it was point of contact of diverse towns and civilizations, this makes Ribadavia a villa of great cultural tradition in Galicia. Centre of important celebrations and international events, throughout the year, the capital of the Ribeiro is a dynamic cultural place.

Its historical centre has been declared of Cultural Interest, is has traditional network of medieval "rúas" where taking a walk becomes a pleasure for history lovers. A route full of surprises like the castle of the Sarmiento, the Jewish District, the museums or numerous churches of different times and styles. Surrounded by a varied landscape of vineyards and suggestive brooks, Ribadavia is a live museum full of history.

The geographic situation of the Concello de Ribadavia confers it a central position between Vigo and the city of Ourense. This central position is not limited to the South of Galicia, but it extends to several of the most important localities in the north of Portugal, as it is the case of Braga and Chaves.

The advantage of this central position is that it allows an agile communication with the cities of Vigo and Ourense. Very soon, when the construction works for the motorway between Ourense and the capital of Galicia are finished, this central position will be reinforced with the North of Galicia.

The existing product specialization in the Concello de Ribadavia associated to wine production of the highest quality is a potentiality that must be taken advantage of in all its magnitude.

The quality associated to the wine of Or Riberio Origin gives this brand an image that is being used in other productive activities.

One example is the association between the wine and the tourist development, in conjunction both variables will contribute to improve the image of Ribadavia as a tourist destiny, offering a distinct product from other competing localities.

Rivadavia has unquestionable tourist attractions like its Historical Centre and also counts on great promotion opportunities through cultural and ethnographic events.

B. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers
TASKS OF THE VOLUNTEER

The volunteers, together with the personnel of the Youth Information Centre, will compile a file with information for young people from local associations and with a news summary. This file will be published every fortnight in the form of a news paper. The volunteer will also help in the organization and execution of campaigns for change from the Centre. The schedule of the volunteer will be from 09:30 to 14:30. Five times per week the volunteers will attend a Course of Spanish Language that will take place in the house of the culture of Ribadavia. During the first week, the volunteer will receive a tour of the city and the region, so that they can begin to discover the local culture and the most emblematic sites. During their stay, the volunteer will have the opportunity to attend courses organized and funded by the City council, as well as trips organized by local organizations. During their stay the volunteers will have the support from a mentor, who will help the volunteers in his tasks and personal life. As the region of Galicia is rich in traditions and history, several trips and visits to different sites, will be organized in the most significant dates.

The tasks of the volunteer are of support to the professionals who work full-time in the Center, as well as of cultural activities, like in the guided tour of the city of Ribadavia.

Support with the Youth and Tourist Information Service of the City council of Ribadavia.

The volunteer will help in the design and the editing of information documents on activities and services of the Youth Information Centre: drafting prospects and other documents, information on local youth meetings or training courses. C. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process
The selection process will be done according to the following criteria:

Age of volunteer: our preference is for older volunteers , since they have less opportunities (around 30 years old). The adaptability to live in a rural environment, as is the region of the Ribeiro.
Ability to work in a team.
Capacity to be relate to young people, since our project is based on Youth Policies.
Interest in other cultures, in our case this is very important, since Galicia has deeply rooted culture and traditions.
Ease to travel, in our project are there are several mobility programs a year.

In the selection process three current EVS volunteers together with the person in charge of the Youth Information Centre take the decision unanimously.

The only essential requirement that we have, is that the sending organization offers guarantees of serious work and a positive attitude towards the cooperation with our organization, so that the work that both we must carry out for a satisfactory voluntary service is fluid and effective.

D. Special needs (if applicable)
The Youth Information Centre of Ribadavia can now host volunteers with less opportunities. By this we mean people coming from underprivileged cultural, geographic and/or socio-economic backgrounds.
Our office counts on a coordinator trained in this field (Manuel Araujo Montero) that has raised the awareness on dealing with people with less opportunities in our offices.

E. Risk prevention, safety and protection
As a public organisation OMIX complies with all the health and safety regulations to provide safe environment for the volunteer and of the supervision, security and protection of children if the volunteer was between 16 and 17 years old.

Motivation and EVS experience
Objectives and motivations to host volunteers:

It will provide an informal intercultural learning experience to the young people, both to the volunteers, and to the young people from our community (Ribeiro Region), promoting their social integration and active participation, and it will offer them opportunities to show their solidarity.
¢ Hosting volunteers will be reinforced, our project of local development and youth policies, in a context of social interest.

We will maket his Project first time as a short term and i am so happy about it- when we have break between old and new short terms the children are very bored and their parents too.
